The Wreck That Saved My Life

Years ago, I sold off all my project cars to start a family.

On December 11, 2007, God spared my life in a horrible car wreck. I thank God for every breath and for every day!

This was my 2001 Camaro after someone pulled out in front of me on my way to work. The wreck broke my neck.

I know in my heart that God is the ONLY reason I made it through that wreck and I pray that I honor him in everything I do. I have met so many wonderful people because all this!

Right before the accident, I had tracked down one of my old Trans-Ams, a '77 Buccaneer Red hardtop, in order to restore it for my youngest son, Mason.

While I was recovering from the wreck, I met another car builder who inspired me to get better. He and his wife are wonderful people and they have become very good and valued friends of our family. God does work in mysterious ways.

Read "A Bird in the Hand...Our Story" below to see how it all began.

We decided to take you along on one of our restoration journeys. If you visit the "Eleanor" section you can see our '77 Trans-Am Project from the beginning to present day.

A Bird in the Hand…Our Story

This is picture of my old car in the spot we found it.

Above is the car that started it all, my old '77 Trans-Am.

The hunt for my old Trans-Am began one Friday with a phone call to the Classic Car Restoration Shop, where I had sold it about 10 years earlier. Over the years, there were a couple of cars that I wish I would have kept. This was one of those cars. At that time I sold it, I was about to move and I knew I had no where to store it and no time or money to finish it.

When I sold the car, it had a clean black interior, its original paint job (Buccaneer Red), as well as, the original Trans-Am stickers including the bird on the hood. I put the only dent in it when we loaded it for the Classic Car Restoration Shop.

When I talked to the shop owner, on the phone, he had found the title, but he thought that I was about three years too late, because he remembered crushing it. He went on to say he had more to choose from though and he would make me a great deal because he knew I would fix one up. Disappointed in the news that my car was crushed, I took my two boys the next day and headed over to take a look anyway.

We went deep in the woods to where he described another red Trans-Am. It was not the year I wanted but, I found my old Trans-Am’s fender sitting in front of it. I took a picture and thought that was the only thing left.

My old fender, which was the first clue my car was still there.

I told my boys that was my old fender. We had passed another red F-body car on the way in next to a blue Formula. I thought that couldn’t be my car because the shop owner had said it was crushed. I had taken a picture of it on the way in anyway. Later that day, as we walked around, something drew my back to that car. I looked at it harder this time. I remembered that my car had the original door molding and some metal mud flaps on the rear tires. This shell of a car was in rough shape. Here I am looking at a shell with a busted windshield, no front cap, no interior and no trunk. I made my way around the back and noticed two Hurst stickers and a local radio station sticker. I remembered that my old car had those stickers on its bumper. It is funny what you remember. This had to be my car! I called the shop owner and asked him to check the title and compare it to the VIN.

I got the call from him the next day. Yes, it was my car! He said it was still in my name since he had turned it into a parts car. My friend and I picked up the car the following week. My youngest son and I cleaned a spot in the shop a few days before.

Just a few weeks after we brought the car home, God spared me in a horrible car wreck. The wreck fractured two vertebras in my neck. Once I started to become more limber, I started to call old contacts and search for parts for my son’s car since I had a lot of free time during my long recovery. As I searched I realized just how time consuming and hard getting parts for those cars had become and Screamin’ Chicken Chasers © was born. The rest is history.

What's In a Name?

The name Screamin’ Chicken Chasers © (SCC) comes from the pursuit of a dream…the dream to own a Trans-Am.

I was born in 1973, the year that the "Screaming Chicken" debuted as a full hood graphic.

When I was 16 years old I bought a project '73 Trans-Am. Unfortunately, due to some title issues I had to return the car to its owner.

Ever since that day I have "chased" a '73. My other love is a '77, which I purchased many years later.

I moved and sold the '77 and a little over a decade later I relocated that car in an effort to restore it for my son, Mason and decided to help other enthusiasts along the way. The result..."Screamin' Chicken Chasers" (SCC) was born.

Also shortened to "SCC", as well as, "Chasers".

We "chase" vintage parts from backyards to barnyards.
